From Lightning Strike to Smart Home Upgrade: Replacing a Failed C-Bus System with a Modern, Cost-Effective Solution

DSR ProjectsGauteng, South AfricaResidential Automation

When a lightning strike destroyed an ageing C-Bus automation system, the homeowner was faced with a difficult choice: wait months for expensive replacement parts — or rethink the entire approach. DSR Projects designed and delivered a complete turnkey smart home solution that not only restored full functionality but gave the client a vastly superior experience at a fraction of the cost.

The Challenge

A severe electrical storm left a residential property in Gauteng with a completely non-functional C-Bus home automation system. The lightning surge had damaged multiple C-Bus DIN-rail modules, leaving the homeowner without control of their lighting, dimmers, and integrated systems throughout the house.

The immediate instinct was to source like-for-like C-Bus replacement units. However, two major obstacles quickly became apparent. First, the lead time for C-Bus components in South Africa was extensive — we were looking at weeks, potentially months, to source and import the required modules. Second, the cost of replacement C-Bus hardware was significant, and the client was understandably reluctant to reinvest heavily in a legacy platform that had already proven vulnerable.

The homeowner needed their home back — lights working, systems operational, daily life restored — and they needed it done affordably and quickly.

Our Approach

DSR Projects was brought in to assess the situation and provide a practical path forward. After a thorough site survey and audit of the existing wiring infrastructure, we proposed a complete system redesign built around modern, readily available, and cost-effective platforms.

Rather than simply replacing failed hardware with the same technology, we saw an opportunity to give the client something significantly better. We designed a fully integrated smart home ecosystem from the ground up, carefully engineered around the existing cable runs and electrical infrastructure to minimise disruption and keep costs under control.

Every aspect of the solution was designed, engineered, configured, and commissioned by our team — a true turnkey delivery from start to finish.

The Solution: A Complete Ecosystem

Lighting & Control

Sonoff

DIN-rail smart relays and dimmers replaced every C-Bus module, providing reliable switching and dimming across the entire home at a fraction of the cost.

Automation Brain

Home Assistant

The central automation hub, providing powerful scene control, scheduling, and unified management of every connected device under one interface.

Multi-Room Audio

Juke Audio

A purpose-built multi-zone audio system delivering music throughout the home with independent room control and streaming capability.

Surveillance

Hikvision

A comprehensive CCTV solution providing complete coverage of the property with remote viewing and recording capabilities.

Network Infrastructure

UniFi

Enterprise-grade networking ensuring rock-solid connectivity for every smart device, camera, and streaming zone across the property.

Why Sonoff Over C-Bus?

This is a question we anticipated, and the answer comes down to practicality and value. Sonoff’s DIN-rail range offered us smart relays and dimmers that mount directly into the existing DB board, working with the home’s existing wiring without any need for rewiring or structural changes.

Combined with Home Assistant as the automation controller, we were able to replicate and exceed every function the old C-Bus system provided — scene control, dimming, scheduling, remote access — while adding modern features like voice control compatibility, mobile app management, and seamless integration with the rest of the smart home ecosystem.

The cost saving was substantial. The total investment in Sonoff hardware came in at a fraction of what the C-Bus replacement parts alone would have cost, and the system was available immediately — no import delays, no waiting.

Key Advantage: Future-Proof Flexibility

Unlike the proprietary C-Bus ecosystem, the Home Assistant platform is open and extensible. As the client’s needs evolve, new devices, integrations, and automations can be added without being locked into a single manufacturer’s product range or pricing structure.

Before & After

Before — C-Bus System

  • Proprietary, closed ecosystem
  • Expensive replacement components
  • Long lead times for parts in SA
  • Limited integration options
  • Basic scheduling and scene control
  • No multi-room audio integration
  • Ageing platform with declining support

After — DSR Smart Home

  • Open, flexible ecosystem
  • Cost-effective, readily available hardware
  • Immediate local availability
  • Unified control of all systems
  • Advanced automations and remote access
  • Full multi-room audio with Juke Audio
  • Enterprise-grade network and CCTV

The Result

The completed installation delivered a home that is smarter, more capable, and more enjoyable to live in than it ever was with the original C-Bus system. The client now has unified control over their lighting, audio, security cameras, and network — all managed through a single, intuitive interface.

Scenes can be triggered from wall-mounted tablets, mobile phones, or set to run automatically based on time of day, presence, or any number of custom conditions. The Juke Audio system fills the home with music, controllable room by room. Hikvision cameras provide peace of mind with 24/7 recording and remote access. And the UniFi network ensures that every device stays connected, stable, and fast.

What started as a crisis became an upgrade — and the client couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Why DSR Projects?

This project is a perfect example of what sets DSR Projects apart. We don’t just install equipment — we design, engineer, and deliver complete solutions tailored to each client’s specific situation. When the conventional path didn’t make sense, we had the experience and expertise to architect a better alternative and deliver it as a fully commissioned, turnkey system.

From the initial site assessment through to system design, procurement, installation, configuration, and final handover, every step was handled by our team. The client received a single point of accountability and a home automation system that works — reliably, intuitively, and beautifully.

That’s what we mean by Built on Integrity. Driven by Experience.
